PUBLIC NOTICE 16B’ Munitions Response Site Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) in the Waikoloa Maneuver Area South Kohala District, Island of Hawaii The Army Corps of Engineers Completed First Five-Year Review The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has completed the first five-year review (FYR) of an environmental remedy undertaken at the 16B’ Munitions Response Site in the Waikoloa Maneuver Area South Kohala District, Island of Hawaii. The 3.7-acre site is located outside of Waimea Town, north of Kawaihae Road. The site was used by the U.S. Military during World War II as a training area. The environmental remedy removed and disposed of surface and subsurface munitions and explosives of concern. An explosive safety educational awareness program has been implemented. This five-year review provides the basis for the Corps’ determination that the decision document completed in 2016 continues to minimize explosive safety hazards and be protective of human health, safety, and the environment. A hardcopy of the Five Year Review can be viewed starting on November 1, 2021 at the information repositories listed below.
