NOTICE OF CONSULTATION SECTION 106 OF THE NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACT OF 1966 AS AMENDED (2006) MAMALAHOA HIGHWAY SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS VICINITY OF HALEILI ROAD AND BRUNER ROAD HOOKENA AHUPUAA, SOUTH KONA DISTRICT, HAWAII ISLAND FEDERAL-AID PROJECT NUMBER: HSIP-011-1(045) TAX MAP KEYS: TMK (3) 8-4-003, 005, 006, 007, 015; 8-5-001; 8-6-003, 004, 008, 011; 8-7-002, 004-thru-007 Notice is hereby given that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Division (HDOT) are proposing a safety improvements project. This federally federal funded HDOT project is considered a federal action and undertaking, as defined by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (2006). The proposed project is located in 14 ahupuaa (Honaunau; Keokea; Kiilae; Kauleoli 1-2; Kealia 1; Kealia 2; Hookena; Kauhako; Kalahiki; Waiea; Honokua; Pahoehoe A 1-4, Mau; Pahoehoe B 1-3; Kaohe 1-3) district of South Kona, Hawaii Island, Hawaii. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) is the existing road right-of-way (ROW) of the Mamalahoa Highway (SR 11), between the mile posts of 96.0 to mile post 105.3. The project includes installation of shoulder rumble strips, speed limit signs, additional signage on curves, shoulder widening, new guardrail and new drywell. Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian Organizations and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral, lineal or cultural ties to, cultural and historical property knowledge of and/or concerns for, and cultural or religious attachment to the proposed project area are requested to contact HDOT. Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic or historic preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to contact HDOT and share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the proposed APE. We welcome any information within 30 days of notice.
