PUBLIC NOTICE Areas N and R Munitions Response Sites Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) in the Waikoloa Maneuver Area South Kohala District, Island of Hawaii The Army Corps of Engineers Completed First Five-Year Reviews The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has completed the first five-year reviews (FYR) of an environmental remedy undertaken at the Areas N and R Munitions Response Sites in the Waikoloa Maneuver Area South Kohala District, Island of Hawaii. The sites were used by the U.S. Military during World War II for training. The environmental remedy removed and disposed of surface and subsurface munitions and explosives of concern. An explosive safety educational awareness program has been implemented. This five-year review provides the basis for the Corps’ determination that the decision documents completed in 2016 continues to minimize explosive safety hazards and be protective of human health, safety, and the environment.
