PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE Former Waikoloa Maneuver Area FUDS Munitions Response Site: Sector 16 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District is holding a public meeting to present the Remedial Investigation plan for the Waikoloa Maneuver Area Munitions Response Site Project 20, Sector 16 Parcels A, B, C, D, and E, Wednesday, October 25, 5-6:30 p.m. Sector 16A-E, a Formerly Used Defense Site, is 6,600.9 acres in the northwest section of the WMA adjacent to Kawaihae Road which forms the southern boundary. The northern boundary is the Kohala foothills. The western extent is at Kawaihae Harbor and the Pacific Ocean to the east the town of Waimea. During this phase of the CERCLA process, contracted field teams will be collecting data to determine the nature and extent of munitions use. Activities will include vegetation clearance to facilitate access and use of digital geophysical mapping and handheld metal detectors. Hand digging of potential items may be necessary in some areas which may require resident evacuations. USACE and contract representatives will present details on the remedial investigation schedule and methodology. Representatives from Hawai’i Department of Health and the contractor will also be available to answer questions. The public is encouraged to attend in-person or online.
