REVEREND CANON DAVID PAUL COON The Reverend Canon David Paul Coon, 95, of Kamuela, died on December 12, 2023, after a long illness. He was born on January 3, 1928, in Flint, Michigan. In 1970, David was appointed Headmaster of ‘Iolani School and remained in that position until his retirement in 1992. After his retirement in 1992, Rev. Coon became the substitute minister in various parishes on the Big Island, traveling between Ocean View and Kapa’au. In 1998, Rev. Coon became an interim trustee for Kamehameha Schools, where he served for two years. He continued his service to the community, serving on various boards, including Parker School, the North Hawaii Community Hospital, and fundraising for various causes. David Coon is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joanne Leilani, children, Deborah Hall, Paul (Diane), Karen, and Kathryn (John) Cross, 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at St. James in Kamuela on January 13, 2024, at 11:00 am, and at St. Albans at ‘Iolani School on February 4, 2024 at 11:00 am. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations to St. James and/or the David P. Coon scholarship at ‘Iolani School.
