Five-Year Review for Pohakuloa Training Area, Island of Hawaii, Hawaii The Army is initiating the Third Five-Year Review of the environmental remedies implemented at two sites at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) in Hawaii County, Hawaii. The Five-Year Review will be conducted for Landfill 1 (POTA-03) and Landfill 2 (POTA-06). A Five-Year Review is required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act and the National Contingency Plan because contamination currently remains at the sites above levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure (i.e., residential use). The purpose of the Five-Year Review is to evaluate the implemented remedies at Landfill 1 (POTA-03) and Landfill 2 (POTA-06) and verify the remedies remain protective of human health and the environment. The review involves physically inspecting the sites and the remedies that are in place; examining records, such as monitoring reports and maintenance records; and conducting interviews with personnel familiar with the sites. This review occurs no less than every five years. The findings of this review will be documented in the Third Five-Year Review Report.
