Notice of Consultation: Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as Amended (2006) KAWAIHAE HARBOR IMPROVEMENTS KAWAIHAE 1 AND 2 AHUPUAA, SOUTH KOHALA DISTRICT, HAWAI’I ISLAND TAX MAP KEY(S): [3] 6-1-003:022 POR., :023 POR, 024 POR, :028, :032, :033, :034, :036 POR, :037, :038, :039, :041, :043, :044, :046, :048, :049, :052, :053, :054, :057, :058, :059, :060 POR, :061, :062, :063, :064, AND (3)-6-1-002:999 (RIGHT-OF-WAY) Notice is hereby given that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Maritime Administration (MARAD) has awarded funds to the State of Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT) under the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) for critical infrastructure upgrades to modernize Kawaihae Commercial Harbor (Kawaihae Harbor) located on the northwest coast of Hawai’i Island in the South Kohala District. This project is considered a federal action and undertaking, as defined by Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations, ยง 800.16(y) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (2006) The majority of the work will be contained within Kawaihae Harbor proper, however, improvements to the entrance will involve work along Kawaihae Road (Hawaii Route 270). In summary, work involves roadway/entrance improvements at the Main Gate of the Harbor, repaving portions of the harbor, replacing 40′ light poles with 80’light poles, and relocating existing offices to an existing maintenance building within the harbor. Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian Organizations/Descendants with ancestral, lineal, or cultural ties to, cultural and historical property knowledge of and/or concerns for, and cultural or religious attachment to the proposed project area are requested to respond. Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic, or historical preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to share information on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the project area.
