PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE Waikoloa Maneuver Area FUDS Munitions Response Site: Project 18 Waimea-Kohala Airport Area The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District is holding a public meeting for the Munitions Response Site (MRS) Project 18 upcoming Remedial Action at theWaimea-Kohala Airport, Island of Hawai’i, January 12, 2026 at 10 a.m. Project 18, a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS), encompasses 379.6 acres located in the north-central portion of the Waikoloa Maneuver Area (WMA). Project 18 east of Mamalahoa Highway was within the “Maneuver Area 2 Non-Firing” portion of WMA, while Project 18 west of Mamalahoa Highway was in proximity to the known distance ranges used for weapons firing training during the World War II era. The project is in the remedial action phase of the CERCLA process, with 11.2 acres being investigated under this upcoming action. During this phase, contracted field teams will implement the selected remedy detailed in the decision document. Activities will include vegetation clearance to facilitate access and use of digital geophysical mapping and handheld metal detectors. Hand digging may also be necessary for potential targets of interest. Representatives from USACE, Hawai’i Department of Health, and the contractor will be available to answer questions. The public is encouraged to attend in-person.
